WTA Introduces Tap to Pay on Buses

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

What changed: Starting July 16, 2026, all fixed route buses in Bellingham now accept contactless payments via credit/debit cards or mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Why it matters: Residents can now pay fares without cash or tokens, with fare capping offering free rides after three daily or 30 monthly trips using the same device. The system avoids 'card clash' issues by requiring individual taps.

What we know: WTA's new Tap to Pay system requires riders to hold their card or device flat against a reader, wait for a green screen and beep, and avoid sharing cards. The program will expand to Paratransit later this summer. Comment period for the 2027-2032 Transportation Improvement Program ends July 15, 2026.
