WTA to Accept Tap-to-Pay on Buses Starting Soon

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

What changed: The Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) has begun accepting contactless payments on all fixed route buses using credit/debit cards or mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. The system, now available, requires riders to tap their own card or device at the bus reader.

Why it matters: This change simplifies fare payment for riders, eliminates the need for exact change, and offers fare capping benefits. Using the same card or device for three rides in a day or 30 rides in a month triggers free rides for the remainder of the day or month. The system was previously limited to some routes.

What the source says: The WTA website states that riders must avoid "card clash" by removing cards from wallets before tapping and must use the same card or device for every trip to activate fare capping. Tap-to-Pay will also be added to Paratransit services later this summer.
