WA Right to Repair Law Signed, Advocates Push for Federal Action

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Washington state's Right to Repair law, signed in 2025, allows independent repair shops like Bellingham's FiXCO to fix electronics and mobility devices, following years of advocacy by shop owner Mitch Kramer. The law, one of the strongest in the country, lets the state Attorney General enforce violations under the Consumer Protection Act.

Kramer, who lobbied for the bill since 2017, said manufacturers previously made basic repairs like screen replacements nearly impossible. Advocates now aim to expand the law nationally, with support from iFixit founder Kyle Wiens, who called Washington's law a model for other states.
