Two men charged in Birch Bay shooting

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

Two men were charged with first-degree assault following a shooting in Birch Bay on Sunday, September 6, at 7:15 p.m. in the 7800 block of Birch Bay Drive. William Huskey, 54, faces three counts of first-degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment. Roman Mayne de Isla Puga, 32, faces one count of first-degree assault, one count of drive-by shooting, and one count of making a false report.

Whatcom County prosecutors sought $1 million bonds for both men, arguing they posed a substantial safety risk. Both men pleaded not guilty during a Tuesday preliminary hearing and arraignment. The incident occurred in a densely populated area, with one person injured and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Prosecutors called it "a miracle" no one else was hurt.

The City Council will consider a separate ordinance banning kratom and 7-OH products on September 14, which would make violations a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail or $5,000 fines.
