Sumas Pastor Documents Flood History

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Carl Crouse, associate pastor at Sumas Advent Christian Church, has authored two books documenting flooding events in Sumas, including the 2021 flood and the December 2025 flood. The books, titled 'The Waters are Rising' and 'A Flood of Emotions,' were written to preserve community stories from these events.

Crouse explained that during the 2021 flood, the church served as a resource center and shelter for displaced residents, where he collected firsthand accounts. He noted that documenting these floods was important to provide a historical record for Sumas residents.

The Sumas Advent Christian Church, which had not flooded before 2021, became a critical hub for recovery efforts during the 2021 flood. Crouse's books aim to capture the community's experience during these natural disasters.

Carl Crouse's books aim to capture the community's experience during these natural disasters“You have written a book about the most recent flood, and you wrote one after the 2021 floods. Can you talk about why it was important to you to document these floods soon after they happened? Yes, the 2021 flood, I spent a lot of time — it was in this room, actually, where we're sitting [in the Sumas church] — this was the resource center for the recovery effort. And so this was the building that (had) never flooded up until then, and so we were the shelter for people that were displaced. And then city hall had flooded in that flood, and so the police, the city workers were here. I heard a lot of stories and talked to a lot of people, and it's what I do anyways, just trying to be available to people. And so after the flood came, and we were three months here, I just started thinking it would be nice to document the 2021 flood because the story itself was so dramatic. I just wanted to give a gift to the people of Sumas to document what ”
