Paddlers head back to the dock Aug. 24 during a Wild Women on the Water event at the Community Boating Center. The women-centered program offers women the ability to explore keelboat sailing, dinghy sailing and sea kayaking in a fun and supportive environment. ( Andy Bronson /Cascadia Daily News) A group of women clad in life jackets and water shoes gathered at the water’s edge, eyeing a line of sea kayaks. Some laughed nervously as they practiced clambering in and out of the boats, while others discussed tips and adjustments with instructors. For some, this was their first time on a kayak, let alone at a Wild Women paddle. For others, it was just another Wednesday. Wild Women Paddles are a weekly Wednesday gathering held each summer at the Community Boating Center (CBC), one of several events offered under its Wild Women on the Water program. Ginny Boughner talks to a group about how to get in a kayak. ( Andy Bronson /Cascadia Daily News) In partnership with Shifting Gears, a nonprofit that helps women access outdoor recreation on and off the water, CBC launched the program in 2021 to help women participants build community and remove barriers to recreating on the water. Outdoor recreation can come with big barriers, from perceptions of who belongs outdoors to the cost of gear, said Carley Kwiatkowski, the Wild Women Paddles lead.
