Right to Repair Law Strengthens Local Repair Access

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Washington state's 2025 Right to Repair law, which supports electronics owners and small repair businesses, has taken effect, allowing Bellingham repair shop FiXCO to better service customers.

FiXCO owner Mitch Kramer, who lobbied for the law since 2017, said manufacturers had made simple fixes like screen and battery replacements nearly impossible before the law. Two bills enabling third-party repairs on electronics and mobility devices were signed into law in 2025, with enforcement under the state Attorney General’s Office.

Advocates, including iFixit founder Kyle Wiens, say Washington’s law is one of the strongest in the country and plan to push for similar federal legislation.
