Ramel Faces Three Challengers in 40th District Primary

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

State Rep. Alex Ramel, who has served in the Washington Legislature since 2020, faces three challengers in the upcoming primary election for Legislative District 40. The district includes all of San Juan County and parts of Bellingham and Skagit County.

Ramel's opponents are Monte Jay Mahan, a Bellingham business owner, Joseph Segault, a stone mason from Orcas Island, and Salomon Rodrigue Mbouombouo, a mechanical engineer who did not respond to interview requests. The primary election will determine who represents the district in the state legislature.

The state voters' guide notes that legislators will need to address significant budget deficits, including the implementation of a 9.9% income tax on households earning over $1 million annually, which opponents are challenging through legal means and a potential ballot initiative.
