Pickford on Grand Celebrates First Anniversary

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

The Pickford Film Center's second location, Pickford on Grand, celebrated its first anniversary on August 1, 2026, following its opening on August 1, 2025. The nonprofit cinema received $2.75 million in community donations and a $600,000 loan to build the 105 Grand St. location. Executive Director Susie Purves said the community's overwhelming support—250 people showed up on opening day instead of the expected 25—demonstrates Bellingham residents' commitment to art house cinema. The center is now $49,500 away from owning the building in full. The cinema will host a 'Grandiversary' celebration in August with special film screenings to mark the anniversary.

Executive Director Susie Purves spoke about the community's overwhelming support“"We thought that only about 25 people would show up (on opening day), and then there were probably 250 people or more," Purves said. "The place was packed for two hours." The Pickford on Grand is located at 105 Grand St., just a block away from the nonprofit cinema’s flagship building. Its construction was made possible by $2.75 million dollars’ worth of community donations, plus a $600,000 loan.  Now, the nonprofit cinema is just $49,500 shy of owning the Grand’s building in full. Purves said the fiscal support sends a clear message: Bellingham residents care about movies. "We have donors who send us notes [like]: 'The reason we moved to Bellingham was that there was access to an art house theater,'" Purves said. That’s not to mention long-term residents who’ve been "appreciators of what we do" for years on end.”
