PCT hikers end trek at Whatcom border obelisk

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Wildfires have forced Pacific Crest Trail hikers to end their 2,600-mile journey at Monument 47 in Whatcom County instead of the traditional northern terminus 30 miles north of Harts Pass. David Whitehair, 41, completed his 141-day hike on Wednesday at the U. S.-Canada border marker near Glacier, calling it 'nothing short of astonishing' despite the unconventional finish. The obelisk, a stainless-steel monument marking the international boundary, has become a new destination for thru-hikers this year. Whitehair, a vintner from Santa Barbara, California, said he'd 'had dreams to say what it feels like to finish the PCT.' The traditional PCT terminus remains closed due to fire-related closures in the Pasayten Wilderness.
