Pacific Crest Trail hikers reroute due to wildfires

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Pacific Crest Trail hikers are ending their 2,600-mile journey at Monument 47 in Whatcom County instead of the traditional northern terminus due to wildfires closing part of the route.

David Whitehair, 41, completed his 141-day hike at the U. S.-Canada border marker in the Mount Baker Wilderness on September 4, 2026. The obelisk has become a new terminus for hikers this year as wildfires have closed the traditional route 30 miles north in the Pasayten Wilderness. Whitehair described the ending as 'nothing short of astonishing' despite not reaching the usual endpoint.

The Pacific Crest Trail Association has not officially designated Monument 47 as a terminus, but hikers are using it as an alternative due to fire closures. The traditional northern terminus remains 30 miles north of Harts Pass.
