New editor named for Cascadia Daily News

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Jonathan Martin has been hired as editor-in-chief of Cascadia Media Company, effective September 2026. This follows the July 2026 firing of former executive editor Ron Judd, who disagreed with leadership about the company's direction.

Martin, a Washington native with 30 years of journalism experience at The Spokesman-Review, The Seattle Times, and Honolulu Civil Beat, will oversee Cascadia Daily News and Cascadia Daily Life. He expressed enthusiasm for the company's mission, calling it a 'unicorn' in today's struggling media landscape. The company plans to grow readership and revenue under his leadership.

The city council is also considering a seven-year business tax exemption for new downtown businesses to address a 15% vacancy rate in the downtown core. Avellino Coffeehouse recently closed after 20 years, adding to concerns about commercial viability in the area.
