The new Amtrak Cascades trainset completed a test run through Bellingham on July 21, traveling from Seattle to Vancouver, B. C. and back. This marks the final step before the trainsets enter regular service later this year.
Amtrak ordered eight new trainsets with Siemens in 2021, with the Pacific Northwest being the first region to receive the next-generation fleet. The new trains feature 300 seats compared to the current 250-seat Talgo Series 8 trains, boosting passenger capacity after the withdrawal of 26 aging Horizon rail cars in March 2025 due to corrosion issues.
The southern segment of the Cascades route from Seattle to Eugene, Oregon, will undergo similar test runs on July 23 before the new fleet enters service this year.
