Mount Baker Highway Reopens After Crash

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542) reopened in both directions near Hatchery Road (milepost 21) Tuesday morning after a crash closed the road overnight. The crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. July 28 when a 2008 gray Volkswagen Rabbit traveling eastbound left the road, hit a power pole, and rolled into a field.

The driver, a 17-year-old Maple Falls resident, and two passengers—a 15-year-old from Deming and a 16-year-old from Maple Falls—were taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph's Medical Center with injuries. All wore seatbelts. State Patrol investigators believe drugs and alcohol were involved, and the cause is under investigation. Puget Sound Energy crews replaced the damaged power pole Tuesday morning.

The Washington State Department of Transportation reported the highway reopened after repairs were completed.
