Hiker chased by bear near Lake Whatcom

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

A hiker and her leashed dog were chased by a black bear on a trail north of Lake Whatcom on Aug. 15, according to a state Department of Fish and Wildlife alert issued Aug. 16. WDFW officers used dogs to search for the bear but could not locate it. The exact location was not shared, but the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition noted increased bear activity on Y Road's Olsen Creek trail network on Aug. 17.

WDFW advises that bears generally avoid people and attacks are rare, but in 2022 a jogger was injured during a bear encounter north of Lake Whatcom. The department recommends standing tall, waving hands, speaking calmly, and not running from a bear. It also suggests carrying bear spray and keeping dogs leashed while hiking.

The incident follows a 2022 event where a bear was euthanized after injuring a jogger in the same area. WDFW has not indicated further action on this incident.
