Fire at former seafood building on Bellingham waterfront

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

A fire broke out at the former Bornstein Seafoods headquarters on Bellingham's waterfront at 1001 Hilton Ave. on Sept. 12 around 10:45 p.m., according to Bellingham Fire Department (BFD) and Whatcom County Fire District 7.

No one was inside the building during the fire, and no injuries were reported, said Rachel Carlson, BFD assistant fire chief. Firefighters were still quenching the blaze around midnight, with a fire inspector on the way to the scene. The building, closed since June 2024 when Bornstein Seafoods laid off 72 workers, housed a cold-storage company that stored frozen seafood. Carlson could not confirm the current business occupying the building or the fire's cause or extent of damage.

The Port of Bellingham's public affairs administrator said Bornstein had planned to sublease the property for food processing use. BFD has not completed a full building search as of shortly after midnight Sunday.
