George Jay holds a protest sign in August outside the Skagit County Courthouse. Jay suffers from a deep sense of guilt for his role in recruiting young men into the military in the 1960s. Since then, he's been part of the peace movement and can now be found outside the Mount Vernon courthouse on Fridays. ( Finn Wendt /Cascadia Daily News) George Jay Age: 89 City: Alger Lived here for: 22 years Originally from: Sante Fe, New Mexico Notable: Owns the Washington state "PEACE" license plate, member of Veterans for Peace, father of four and is an Aries. How did you get involved with Veterans for Peace? As an unindicted war criminal, I felt it important that I make up for my shame, guilt and blame. Being a member of Veterans for Peace, we understand the vitality of the peace movement, and that eventually it’s going to overcome the military-industrial complex. When you say "unindicted war criminal" what are you talking about? I went to an ROTC college, Middlebury, in Vermont. Because I was active in theater and gregarious, they put me on a track toward recruiting. That’s what I’m guilty about: convincing young people — and working with juvenile courts to drop charges against kids — because we’ll put them in the military and ‘make a man of them.’ It’s a big burden of guilt that I carry. When did you start recruiting? In 1960, I was commissioned as second lieutenant and went to recruiting school in Indiana, and shortly after, graduated as a re
