East Whatcom Leader Hospitalized After Yellowstone Bison Attack

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

Carl McDaniel, a community leader from East Whatcom County, was hospitalized after being attacked by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Friday, July 10. The incident occurred at Bridge Bay Campground near Yellowstone Lake when McDaniel and his grandchild stopped to take a photo of the animal.

According to the New York Times, the bison rolled in the dust, then charged a truck before chasing McDaniel and his grandchild around trees and tossing McDaniel about eight feet into the air. His grandchild was not injured. McDaniel, who is in his mid-60s and serves on several local boards including the Foothills Community Alliance and Columbia Valley water and parks districts, suffered multiple broken bones but was reported to be in good spirits at the hospital.

Witness Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer from Montana, filmed the incident around 8:30 p.m. and told the New York Times the bison was likely experiencing a "surge of testosterone." McDaniel could not be reached for comment as of Sunday, July 12.
