County Economic Plan Update Lacks Public Input

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Whatcom County, its seven incorporated cities, the Port of Bellingham, and other agencies are updating the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) without public participation, according to a guest commentary in Cascadia Daily News. The plan, which aims to support living-wage jobs and maintain eligibility for federal grant funding, is being updated for 2027-2031 with public comment scheduled for September and October before county council approval in December.

At a July 14 Port of Bellingham meeting, Commissioner Michael Shepard questioned whether the previous CEDS should be graded, but economic development director Tyler Schroeder stated he hadn't reached that point. The commentary argues the update process needs greater transparency and substantive review of the current plan.
