Bellingham mayor explains city’s approach to federal issues at immigration forum — Wed, 07 Oct 2026 05:22:37 +0000
Mayor Kim Lund addresses a crowd of about 100 people inside the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship church Oct. 5. She discussed the city's efforts to oppose the encroachment of federal immigration law enforcement actions within city limits. ( Santiago Ochoa /Cascadia Daily News) At a meeting on Tuesday night hosted by Indivisible Bellingham, Mayor Kim Lund addressed community concerns around immigration enforcement, surveillance and federal overreach.  She also let people know that U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which had reserved part of the public pool at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center for swim testing the following day, had canceled the event because of community outrage. A protest was planned outside Arne Hanna by the Bellingham Troublemakers group, who called on the city to stop making public facilities available to agencies that perform federal immigration enforcement.  The announcement of the cancellation provoked cheers and applause from the audience at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship. However, Lund pointed out that CBP has used the pool for many years for swiftwater training, to prepare agents for rescues during emergencies such as the December 2025 floods. City attorney Sarah Chaplin also noted the city doesn’t have a legal basis to deny groups the use of public facilities.  Attendees clap after Bellingham Mayor Kim Lund announces U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s decision to not use the pool at the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center for swim testing

Nooksack Valley's Elizabeth De Lange scores a point over two Lynden Christian blockers in a November 2025 match. Nooksack hosts Sehome Oct. 10. ( Nick Zeller-Singh /Cascadia Daily News) Sehome vs. Nooksack Valley When: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 Where: Nooksack Valley High Nooksack Valley has struggled since a 3-0 start to the season. The Pioneers lost a handful of starters from last year’s roster and now are trying to build gameplay experience for its younger players. Nooksack Valley is still a solid 1A team with wins over Class 2A teams Burlington-Edison and Anacortes, and narrowly lost a five-set battle against 3A Oak Harbor. If the Pioneers want to beat Sehome, they need a career-high performance from senior Elizabeth De Lange and freshman Allie Reynolds. De Lange is averaging nearly four kills and one ace per set, while Reynolds is averaging more than two kills per set. On the other side, Sehome is chasing a top-10 standing for the 2A classification. Aside from a five-set loss to 3A Ferndale and being swept by Lynden, the Mariners have had a stellar start to the season. Sehome has swept each opponent it has defeated this season, including 1A state runner-up Meridian. The Mariners are led by Paige Flory, who is scoring more than three kills and tallying over two digs per set. Radler Rosellson and Brooklyn Flamer also average more than one kill a set and can make for a dangerous offensive trio. If the Mariners can spread the ball on offense and stop De Lange on defense, it c
