BPS Gives Tours Amid Enrollment Concerns“We can confirm that staff gave tours last week at several of our schools. Given the current community conversation about declining enrollment & potential closures, some organizations are reaching out and inquiring about buildings that could become available.”

School district says it's meeting with groups about facility use but not committing to rentals or closures.“We can confirm that staff gave tours last week at several of our schools. Given the current community conversation about declining enrollment & potential closures, some organizations are reaching out and inquiring about buildings that could become available. As we receive these inquiries, we are transparent that we aren’t currently planning a rental or lease of any district building. At the same time, we are willing to meet with organizations who reach out to us, walk through facilities and learn more about their potential needs and ideas. Tours are one way to gather information and understand various options/opportunities – but it isn’t a commitment to rent or lease a facility. If a school were ultimately closed, we would develop a process to determine whether and how facilities could be rented, leased or repurposed.”

Statement about tours and BPS facilities, Sept. 22, 2026 Sep 22 2026 Bellingham Public Schools regularly receives requests from organizations in the community interested in using district facilities. We can confirm that staff gave tours last week at several of our schools. If a school were ultimately closed, we would develop a process to determine whether and how facilities could be rented, leased or repurposed. We have heard consistent feedback from our community that they do not want any buildings sitting empty – we feel the same way, and if any school is to close, we would work to repurpose it and/or find a renter or other use. Our approach to tours and how we manage district facilities is consistent; we maintain them as community assets, prioritize student and district needs, and support community access where feasible. See facility rental policy 4260 (language from policy below): Authorization for use of school facilities will not be considered as endorsement or approval of the activity, group or organization. The district does not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, honorably-discharged veteran or military status, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, homelessness, immigration or citizenship status, marital status, the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability, neurodivergence, or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability and provides equal access to Boy Scouts of America and other designated youth groups. We would defer to outside organizations to provide clarity and information to those who wish to learn more.
