Bellingham writer Cori Winrock, a professor of interactive poetics at Western Washington University, was named one of seven winners in the 2026 Washington State Book Awards for her book-length essay 'Alterations.' The work explores grief through themes of textiles, visual artists, and Emily Dickinson's white dress, with late-term pregnancy loss as its undercurrent. Winrock described the book as weaving together stories of women who sewed Apollo spacesuits and those who repurpose wedding dresses into burial garments for babies lost in the NICU.
Winrock, who wrote 'Alterations' as an interactive digital piece for Territory Magazine before adapting it for Transit Book's 'Undelivered Lectures' series, called the award 'the first time in my life where I just bawled out of extreme happiness.' The recognition marks a significant achievement for the Bellingham-based author and educator, highlighting local literary talent within the state's cultural landscape.
