Bellingham to clear homeless encampment with city support

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

The City of Bellingham will support private property owners in clearing and logging a 40-acre homeless encampment near Walmart in north Bellingham starting in August, according to a letter to the King Mountain Neighborhood Association. The encampment, estimated to house 150 residents, has been located between East Stuart Road, Kellogg Road and James Street on private property for an extended period.

City officials stated the cleanup aims to address health and safety risks, criminal activity, and environmental damage rather than solve homelessness. King Mountain neighbors expressed concerns about violent crimes and health hazards including human waste and toxic fires within the encampment. After residents leave, a logging company will build access roads and prepare the properties for cleanup and timber harvest.
