Bellingham Bay closed for recreational shellfish harvest

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Bellingham Bay is closed for recreational harvesting of all molluscan shellfish after unsafe levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning biotoxin were detected. The closure, announced by Whatcom County Department of Health and Community Services on Sept. 30, includes Chuckanut Bay and all of Larrabee State Park.

Molluscan shellfish include clams, mussels, oysters, and scallops. Mussels typically contain the highest toxin concentration. Crab meat is unaffected, but crab butter and entrails should be discarded. Shellfish sold in restaurants and markets are tested and safe to eat.
