Ann Patchett discusses 'Whistler' at Ferndale event

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Author Ann Patchett discussed her new novel "Whistler" at a sold-out event at Ferndale High School's Performing Arts Center on July 11. The event was hosted by the Whatcom County Library System as part of their Summer at the Library program.

Patchett explained that "Whistler" explores the idea that romantic love can be found in friendships. The novel follows 53-year-old Daphne Fuller as she reconnects with her stepfather Eddie Tripplet after her mother divorced him when she was 9. Patchett revealed the book was loosely based on her friendship with her former lawyer Jim Fox, whom she described as a "best reading friend."

Patchett also shared that she abandoned a previous book project that featured a horse, which inspired the novel's title and cover art. She mentioned that losing Fox to pancreatic cancer influenced her decision to write "Whistler."
